We offer a post of TRANSLATOR/INTERPRETER. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation and on the changes of these needs. The successful candidate will serve as technical and support staff to the Delegation as a whole, providing support, expertise and assistance.
Type of contract:
The successful candidate will be recruited as local agent under Group I. The basic salary will depend on relevant and verified employment experience, typically starting from 2.500 EUR. . In addition, benefits, such as an additional pension scheme and medical insurance, are offered to employees and their families under certain conditions.
The expected start date will be 15 March 2023.
- Definite contract of one year (with possible renewals)
- Probation period: 1 month
- Place of employment: European Union Delegation to Libya, Tripoli
- Weekly working hours : 37H30
Functions and duties
- Translate all necessary documents form English to Arabic and vice-versa.
- Interpret from English to Arabic and vice-versa simultaneously and consecutively when required.
- Interpret courtesy calls, demarches, speeches/lectures, interviews, contacts with local authorities and organizations, dinners/luncheons, missions, technical meetings with ministries, meetings with economic and industrial organizations, contacts with private sector players, press interviews, speeches, etc.
- Interpret for missions from Headquarters (President, Commissioners, Directors generals, Head of Division, administrators and experts, etc).
- Any other tasks related to translation/interpretation.
Selection criteria:
Minimum requirements:
- Medically fit to perform the required duties;
- Enjoy civil rights and permits for employment under local law;
- Professional fluency in English (spoken and written) and native Arabic;
- University degree;
- A very good knowledge of relevant IT tools (MS Office);
- At least 3 years working experience of relevant professional experience.
The following will be considered an asset:
- Diploma in interpretation or translation studies, in communication, literature or other studies of the humanities;
- Experience in an international organization or diplomatic mission;
- Other EU language(s)
- Excellent oral and written presentation skills; good IT skills;
- Specialist knowledge (know what): Media relations, public diplomacy;
- Technical knowledge (Know How): Ability to write in Arabic and English.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, national counterparts; donor agencies, other stakeholders and ability to adapt well in a multi-cultural environment;
- Personal initiative and ability to focus on priorities and meet deadlines;
- A high degree of integrity and the ability to deal with confidential information.

The procedure
After the deadline for application, the eligible applications will be admitted to selection by a committee set up for this purpose.
Depending on the number of applications received, successive phases of selection may include shortlisting of candidates based on assessment of the information provided in the cover letter, CV, practical testing and interviews.
Only candidates admitted to each successive selection phase will be contacted individually. The Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this job advertisement to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
The Delegation will not supply additional information or discuss the selection procedure. During the selection process, please do not contact the members of the Selection Committee, but address your questions and comments to the Delegation’s Administration.
The recruitment will take place only after a conclusive medical examination.
