The ICRC Delegation in Libya – seeks to fill the following position:
Language Specialist/Translator
based in Tripoli, Libya
PURPOSE:
The Language Specialist 1 helps the ICRC communicate clearly and consistently by providing translation services from Arabic into English and vice versa and editing services in specified languages.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
- Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct.
- Understand the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
- Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times.
- Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times.
- Develops and maintains a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers.
- Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC.
- May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functional Responsibilities:
- Translates from Arabic into English and vice versa and edits a wide range of ICRC texts, within agreed deadlines, ensuring high quality and appropriate terminology. Is revised by a senior colleague.
- May advise colleagues from other parts of the organization on linguistic issues.
- Gets involved in ad hoc or ongoing projects (e.g. terminology).
- Uses and suggests updates to terminology tools (to be approved by the line manager).
- Advises on sensitivities regarding the use of locally spoken languages.
Scope & Impact:
- Works on a wide range of documents and publications.
- Contributes to developing the terminology used by the ICRC in its public communication.
- Contributes to achieving delegation’s objectives at the national level.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Follows up on all work-related messages and correspondence with the relevant contacts and departments.
- Is aware of the delegation’s objectives and has a good knowledge of the Movement relevant to the position.
- Collects and shares information so as to improve the ICRC’s understanding of the environment and humanitarian trends and responses.
- Represents the ICRC in an appropriate way during activities, in meetings and in the field, and avoids any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC’s image.
- Takes responsibility for his/her own professional learning and development.
- May interpret during meetings, negotiations, presentations, seminars and other events, when requested by the delegation management and/or by other departments.
RELATIONSHIPS:
- Internally, interacts across the organization with all internal requesters of language services.
Minimum required knowledge & experience:
- University degree in translation, philology, or relevant professional education from a recognized academic institution or equivalent.
- 3–5 years of proven experience in translation (preferably in an international organization).
- Interpretation experience would be an asset.
- Mother tongue in Arabic.
- Excellent writing skills in Arabic and English.
- Advanced knowledge of English; other languages would be an asset.
- IT proficiency; knowledge of CAT tools would be an asset.
- Good communication skills.
- Capacity to apply ICRC rules and procedures.
- Excellent organizational and methodical abilities, sense of initiative.
- Service-oriented with a strong sense of setting priorities and flexibility.
- Interest in humanitarian activities (especially ICRC’s).
