Terms of Reference: Freelance Video Editor and Trainer

Context: 

BBC Media Action, the BBC’s international development organisation, uses the power of media and communication to inform, connect and empower people around the world, helping them to shape their own lives. Working with broadcasters, governments, other organisations and donors, BBC Media Action provides information and stimulates positive change in the areas of governance, health, and resilience and humanitarian response.

Our work in North Africa covers Algeria and Libya, with our office based in Tunisia. Current projects include capacity building of the Algerian media to create youth sensitive content and provision of content that improves Libyans’ access to information and encourage debate and participation in Libya’s transition through the El Kul Facebook page.

Consultancy Purpose:

BBC Media Action wishes to commission a talented self-driven freelance video editor and trainer to producer multi-media packages and provide El Kul’s editorial team with training, mentoring and technical video editing support. As a team player with proven experience of training and supporting less experienced story tellers, you will be able to work under tight deadlines to produce high quality, world standard social media content, while also supporting a remote team of field staff to improve the quality of their output.

This freelance contract will last for 6-months.

The deliverables are the following:

  • Edit 6 videos (of 2-3 minutes long) per month to include music, interviews, sound clips, effects and GFX.
  • Work remotely with field staff in Libya to improve video and sound quality using FCPX to ensure ideas are presented in a creative and engaging manner.
  • Select visual material to support El Kul’s stories, bringing experience in editing different styles and formats to meet strict transmission deadline.
  • Provide 3-hours of advanced hands on video editing trainings per week to Elkul’s editorial team, alongside weekly one-on-one mentoring sessions with 6 story producers.

The freelance video editor and trainer is expected to use their own equipment when working from home and offices equipment when working from the office.

Required skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Understanding of BBC editorial values
  • Knowledge and understanding of El Kul visual identity
  • Excellent video editing skills
  • Experience in remote teamwork
  • Proven training and capacity building experience.
  • Creative visual storytelling skills.
  • Fluency in Arabic.
  • Strong understanding of the Libyan context and a young Libyan audience.
